Herzlich Willkommen
The German Language School Westwood (GLSW) is a not-for-profit educational organization located in Bergen County, New Jersey. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality German language instruction and cross-cultural experience for both children and adults. Our school welcomes students of all nationalities and backgrounds from Bergen County and neighboring areas of New Jersey and New York.
Most classes meet on Saturday mornings, with additional adult classes held on weekday (usually Thursday) evenings. Classes for children start with a "Mommy and Me" group (ages 18 months to 3 years). They continue with Kindergarten, and go through high school, where students can prepare for the SAT II German subject test, the AP German exam, and the German Government sponsored Sprachdiplom tests, which can result in an opportunity to study at a German university. In certain circumstances, New Jersey high school students can receive credits from their own school for classes taken at the GLSW. A full range of adult classes, from beginner to advanced, including conversation, literature, composition and grammar is also offered.
The German Language School Westwood is recognized by the German Government as a school promoting both the language and the culture of German speaking countries. The GLSW received the designation "Pasch-Schule" which stands for "School: Partners for the Future". We are a partner school with other schools world-wide. This inititive serves to awaken young people's interest in - and enthusiasm for - modern-day Germany and German society.
We offer several cultural events through the year for the children, such as Martinstag, Nikolaustag, Weihnachtsfeier, Fasching, and the Abschlussfeier (which usually includes songs and skits) at the end of the school year. These are lively, active events and are always enjoyable.
For a flavor of what the school is like, please see a very nice write-up in a September 2005 article in the Record newspaper (found in our News section).
The German Cultural Society, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which complies with all federal and state civil rights laws.
